AN APPLICATION OF NEUMANN’S SOLUTION FOR FREEZING OF WATER IN AN ADIABATIC RECTANGULAR CAVITY
This paper is concerned with a trial for an application of Neumann’s solution for the freezing of water in an adiabatic rectangular cavity. Characteristics of Neumann’s solution are presented for an application of it. Degree of applicability investigated by means of a numerical procedure. The freezing of initially heated water (> 0°C) with pure conduction can be fairly predicted by utilizing Neumann’s solution until a critical time td proposed in this study, namely, a knowledge is obtained in that Neumann’s solution on a semi-infinite domain can be applicable to the freezing in a finite domain of the adiabatic cavity. The freezing of the water with natural convection is fairly predicted by Neumann’s solution of the initial freezing temperature (= 0°C). The present results would contribute to calculate easily complicated freezing by very simple Neumann’s solution without some difficult numerical procedures and other troublesome calculations.
