Abstract: In this paper, we analyze and evaluate the effect of a modulation index on the performance of the multi-symbol differential detector (MSDD) adopted in a pulse-coded modulation-frequency modulation (PCMFM) system. With the analysis of the received signal of the MSDD, we can concur that the variation of the modulation index could be regarded as a frequency offset between the transmitter and the receiver. Moreover, when the frequency offset is a dominant degradation factor in the performance of the demodulation, the performance degradation by the variation of the modulation index cannot be distinguished. Thus, we can conclude that based on the exact analysis of the received signal constellation with frequency offset combined modulation index variation, a pre-correction procedure for a subsidiary frequency offset caused by the modulation index variation is very essential prior to detecting the received signal in the PCM/FM telemetry systems. |
