Abstract: Nonedible plant oil extracted from Jatropha curcas L. (JCL) offers the potential to be an alternative to fossil fuel resources. This study aims to compare and evaluate the performance, combustion, and gas emissions characteristics of a diesel engine generator, fuelled by degummed oil and transesterified oil (biodiesel-methyl ester) from Jatropha curcas L. with fossil diesel blends. The performance parameters such as specific fuel consumption (SFC), thermal efficiency (TE), and engine load are computed. The emission constituents, namely, carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), hydrocarbon emission (HC), oxides of nitrogen (NOx), and smoke are evaluated. It is found from the experimental study that degummed oil (Dg20) and biodiesel (B20) show slight increase when there is engine load increase of TE, CO2, smoke, and NOx, which are closer to fossil diesel. Furthermore, the SFC, CO, and of Dg20 and B20 are decreased when compared to that with diesel. Hence, Dg20 and B20 can be selected as optimum blends which can be used in diesel engine generators without any major specifics in modification of the engine.
