Abstract: This article presents an experimental and theoretical investigation in drying of clay material. Different experimental conditions were considered varying the temperature and/or velocity of the drying air. Drying occurred in two distinct periods: a constant rate period and a falling rate period. At first period, the process was described by an empirical equation and, at second one, by a diffusion model with boundary condition of the third kind. For this purpose, a transient 3D analytical solution was used to describe the process. The process parameters were determined by optimization and the drying kinetics were simulated for each experimental condition. The results show that the diffusion model satisfactorily describes the drying process, once the values obtained for the parameters are consistent with those mentioned in the literature for similar studies. In addition, a good agreement between the experimental results and the corresponding simulation was obtained. The results also indicate that both temperature and velocity of the airflow influence the drying process, and, therefore, the drying rate. |
