ELECTROCHEMICAL CORROSION BEHAVIORS OF BOILER TUBE STEELS IN SIMULATED AVT WATERS MIXED WITH CHLORIDE IONS AND SULFATE IONS
Takahiro Nakane (Japan) and Li-Bin Niu (Japan)
Abstract:
Electrochemical corrosion behaviors of STB410 carbon steel, STBA24 low-alloy steel and SUS304 stainless steel, which are used as boiler tube steels in thermal power plants, are investigated in the simulated AVT (All Volatile Treatment) waters mixed with chloride ions and sulfate ions. Four kinds of the test waters, i.e., the base AVT water and the waters added with chloride ions and sulfate ions, are used in this work. Anodic polarization and corrosion potential measurements as well as immersion tests are conducted in the test waters at 308 K. The corrosion rates of STB410 and STBA24 steels are increased by the added corrosive anions. For SUS304 steel, the pitting corrosion sensitivity is increased in the waters contained chloride ions while it is lessened to some extent by the added sulfate ions. It is confirmed that the sulfate ions in the waters restrain the pit initiations but promote the pit growths. In all the test waters, STB410 steel exhibits base corrosion potentials, while STBA24 and SUS304 steels show better corrosion resistances due to the formations of passive films.
