SURFACE STRUCTURES AND METALLOGRAPHIC CHARACTERISTICS OF CONTINUOUS FINE COPPER FIBERS

Abstract:
The continuous fine copper fibers are fabricated on a horizontal engine lathe with a multi-tooth tool, and then the surface structures and metallographic characteristics of the copper fibers are analyzed by using the scanning electron microscope, metallographic microscope, confocal microscope and atomic force microscope. Moreover, the forming mechanism of the surface structures of the copper fibers is also discussed in detail. The result indicates that the continuous fine copper fibers have rough and antler-like surface microstructures with the scale below 30 m; the equivalent diameter of copper fibers is less than 100 m, and the cross-section shape is near rectangle or triangle; the internal grains of copper fibers are extended and deformed at a large extent during processing, but there exist many equiaxed grains produced due to its internal crystallization after sintering at 800ºC for 30 min, which contributes to improve the mechanical properties.
Keywords and phrases:
