Abstract: A free-surface primitive equation two-way interactive
nested ocean model methodology is to develop the increase resolution technique
by employing it in a realistic ocean model environment rather than an idealized
set-up. It was decided to use the model to simulate at a relative fine scale the
flow in the Faroe-Shetland Channel without the computational expense of a large
fine grid model. The fine grid model has a horizontal resolution of longitude or and latitude or with 39 levels in the vertical: the
coarse grid model has a grid 3 times larger, with 13 levels in the vertical.
This technique produces oceanographically acceptable results as well as being
stable over the periods of integration required. It is proposed that this
technique is suitable for use in short-term in the narrow confines well in the
Faroe-Shetland Channel.
