Abstract: Based on circular statistics, we propose a spatial interpolation model when the data are circular, such as angles. Classical spatial statistics cannot be used in this problem since (i) kriging is not invariant by rotation; (ii) the arithmetic mean cannot be used for circular data. We present a heuristic to interpolate angles and study the properties of the estimator.
Our motivating example is to reconstruct the tsunami of December 26, 2004 at Banda Aceh (Indonesia). On an area of 20km2, about 1000 angles were observed, based on impact of the wave. |
