Abstract: One of the most debated aspects regarding university policy in our country in recent times regards the effects of how to finance the cost of these studies. The creation of the salary scholarship since the year 2009-2010 in Spain has meant a remarkable innovation in a country with little tradition in this type of scholarship. However, there are doubts about the real effects of these scholarships on the access to university with large economic difficulties. This research therefore seeks to discover what impact the salary scholarship has had on the academic performance of the college students who have benefited from it in recent years. To achieve this, we have the academic results (courses enrolled in, attended and qualifications) of all the students (10,394) who entered undergraduate degrees at the University of Barcelona in the 2010-2011 academic year. The availability of academic performance data from that year and the three following ones allow us to analyze in detail the impact of having enjoyed a scholarship or salary. To analyze this possible impact, the methodology used was comparing the distributions of the following measures, distinguishing the students with a salary scholarship from the rest: number of courses enrolled in, number of courses attended, number of courses passed, and average grade. The results show that the persistence and graduation rates of the students are related to obtaining a salary scholarship, and that this relationship is amended in accordance with the disciplinary field; academic performance is also different according to course subject fields. |
